Council vows to fix ‘hell road’

22/05/2008 8:10:00 AM
The "hell road" that has worried Tracey Smyth and her partner Tony Casini for five years will be repaired - but not for many months yet.

Cessnock City Council has agreed with the couple: the state of Lovedale Road and Majors Lane outside their home is in a bad way.

"The state of the road is very poor,'' Cessnock Council's director or infrastructure and services Lew Oldfield said.

"The council has allocated $500,000 to repair that intersection, but we are behind in our works program because of the work we've had to do due to flood damage last year,'' Mr Oldfield said.

The council faced a $3 million repair bill from the 2007 floods.

"But, hopefully, this work at the intersection will be completed before the end of the calendar year.'' he said.

"It is earmarked for repair in this current works program."

The council recognised speed was a factor at the intersection and police did patrol regularly because it was a regional link to Maitland.

"Hopefully, these works improvements will slow down many vehicles so they don't cut the corner,'' he said.

The improvements would include a new road surface and more visible line markings.
