Five new probationary constables to the Lower Hunter local area command will begin their first shifts in their new jobs today.
It is believed one had been allocated to Maitland, two to Cessnock and two to Port Stephens.
They will be among 271 new recruits sworn in at Goulburn Police Academy on Friday.
Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said at the ceremony: “As I look to the future of policing in NSW, with the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, I am confident.
“The officers being sworn in bring the vigour, enthusiasm and diversity to the force to take us forward.”
Police Minister David Campbell said the “best police force in the country” had been boosted by the new recruits.
“One of the more pleasing aspects about this group of graduates is the diverse nature of their backgrounds,’’ Mr Campbell said.
“Almost 12 per cent are from non English-speaking backgrounds.
“This is an outstanding improvement on the 5.3 per cent of probationary constables coming from non English-speaking backgrounds in 2002.’’
Mr Campbell was also pleased that almost 28 per cent of the probationary constables were female.
“This is proof that we are continuing to work toward an equitable gender balance,’’ he said.
Maitland MP Frank Terenzini said the new recruits would be a great asset for the community.
“I am confident the people of Maitland will make the new probationary constables very welcome,’’ he said.
