Bleeding from stab wounds and bruised from an attack outside a Greta house, a man managed to drive himself to his home down the road and call for help yesterday.
The victim, a 53-year-old man from Whitburn Street, was recovering in John Hunter Hospital last night with stab wounds to his stomach and head lacerations.
Police rushed to Whitburn Street at 9.30am after they were told a man had been assaulted by several people.
They went to a house in Whitburn Street and spoke to a 53-year-old man who was being treated by ambulance officers.
Police said: “The victim told officers he had been visiting a friend down the road and a number of males had attacked him with golf clubs and metal poles.
“He suffered lacerations to the head and right arm and two small stab wounds to his abdomen but his injuries were not life-threatening.”
A Westpac Rescue Helicopter landed in a nearby paddock and the man was flown to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital where he was last night in a stable condition.
Police said the man had apparently been able to drive himself back up the road to his home after the attack.
Three males aged 47, 21 and 18 were arrested and taken to Singleton police station where they were helping with inquiries last night.
Two crime scenes were set up at two ends of Whitburn Street; one outside a house where the attack took place and the other at the victim’s house to where he had driven.
“The victim was treated by ambulance paramedics and stabilised for the trip to Newcastle,’’ a Westpac helicopter spokesman said.
“He was in a serious but stable condition.”
