Three generations join pre-school celebration

Bill Wolstenholme will be at Maitland Nursery School’s 60th anniversary as a grandfather.

Five decades ago, he was there as a pupil.

Three-year-old Aynsley Russ is the third generation of the Wolstenholme family to attend the school on the banks of the Hunter River.

The family has a special link to the school: Mr Wolstenholme’s older brother Jim was a foundation member when it opened in 1948 and his wife Vayla was president and treasurer when their two daughters Justyn and Tamra went there.

Son-in-law Brad Russ became president of the committee when Aynsley was enrolled.

Mr and Mrs Wolstenholme said it was a flashback when they came to see Aynsley at the school.

“It is pretty special to have that kind of association,” he said.

The school is thought to be one of the oldest preschools in the region.

Co-ordinator Megan Filis estimated 7500 children have attended the school since it started.

She is calling for those past children or committee members to share their experiences or photos to create a historical account for the school’s anniversary on September 14.

“The school was set up in the early days by professional women who thought it was important for their children’s development and we really want to find out more about it,” Ms Filis said.

“I’ve been here for more than 20 years and the staff member I replaced had been here for 20 years.

“We’re really wanting people to contact us about their experiences and particularly if they have photos.

“And we’re really keen to see if there’s another family with three, or more, generations of children who came here.”

A meeting will be held on Wednesday at 6pm to plan a family fun day to mark the anniversary in September.

The meeting is open to anyone with an association with the school. Call the school on 4933 6589 to notify your attendance.
