Almost 200 lawn bowlers will converge on two Maitland clubs tomorrow for the 2008 Senior Inter-zone Sides Championships.
Three rounds of the over-60s event will play out at Maitland City Bowls, Sports and Recreation Club and Lorn Park Bowling Club on Tuesday and Wednesday before the cream of the crop face off in the semi-finals and finals at Rutherford on Thursday.
Maitland City bowls manager Clay Parker said he was excited to see such a major event on the bowls calendar being played out on the lush greens of the two Maitland clubs.
Teams of 12 bowlers from 16 zones across the State, including the Hunter’s zone six players, will take part in the three-day competition, which was held at Halekulani Bowling Club last year.
The championships will be contested in a round robin format, with the zones split into four sections.
Sections one and two will play their rounds at Maitland City, while sections three and four will take to the lawns of Lorn Park.
While the bulk of the zone six outfit will be made up of representatives from Tuncurry Bowling Club, it also features Albert Spruce (Kurri Kurri), Eric Graves (East Maitland), Terry Harmer (Maitland City) and Rod Robards (Maitland City).
The team has been drawn in section four, ensuring the Maitland City bowlers won’t have any home ground advantage when they take on teams from zone one, zone 16 and zone 13 at Lorn Park.
However should they make the grade following the regular rounds, the team could return to the Rutherford club for the semi-final and final, which will begin at 9am and 1pm respectively on Thursday.
