The Maitland City Bowls team have rolled into the semi-finals of the Premier League with a convincing win over Toronto on the weekend.
A renewed Maitland squad, led by new skipper Rodney Darcey, bowled Toronto out of Saturday’s encounter, winning all three rinks with little resistance from the home team. The out-of-form Toronto squad went down 76-39 to the travelling Hunters, spelling the end of their 2008 Premier League season.
Darcey led Maitland’s most impressive performance in four weeks with an encouraging 20-18 win during his rink. Former skipper Clay Parker said the new-look line-up gave the Hunters a boost they needed going into the business end of the season.
“It was a great team effort. No one on the team didn’t do their bit on the weekend,” Parker said.
He also touted it as the best game of the season saying “it was the first time all year we had won all three rinks”. Favourable weather conditions and the familiarity of the surface worked in favour of the Maitland attack.
“The greens at Toronto were almost exactly the same pace as the ones in Maitland, that’s why our guys went so well,” he said. The win on the weekend will see the Hunters move through to the finals games in a favourable position.
Thanks to the win against Toronto, City will take out third place at the end of the season proper, securing a home semi-final against Raymond Terrace in two weeks time.
