It was more like a thumping than just a win, but a barnstorming 80-point victory by the Maitland Blacks has catapulted them into the top five for the first time this season.
With 14 tries and 11 conversion the Blacks were simply relentless in their 92-12 demolishing of Lake Macquarie at Marcellin Park on Saturday and they now sit in fourth spot on the Newcastle and Hunter Rugby Union Premier Grade ladder.
The Blacks are equal on competition points with Wanderers but courtesy of the Maitland boys’ superior for and against record, which was significantly improved after the weekend’s performance, they sit above their Newcastle counterparts.
The Blacks have scored 205 points to the opposition’s 12 in their three victories this season, which have all been by 50 points or more.
The best was on Saturday and Blacks hooker Dan Runchel started the rampage with a try in the corner to open the point-scoring floodgates.
Within 20 minutes the Blacks were out to a 28-0 lead and they had already secured the bonus point.
“We blew them out of the game,” Blacks coach Steve Scobie said.
For Scobie the bonus point was goal achieved but the Blacks did not stop there.
By half-time, despite a 10 minute lapse, the Blacks had scored at greater than a point a minute, with an incredible nine tries.
Five of those nine tries were scored in an eight-minute ambush before the break.
The Blacks dominance continued into the second half with five more tries as they racked up a massive cricket-like score line.
Scobie said the Blacks attack was in full swing by finding space and running the ball but he was quick to point out the effort of the forwards, who won four scrums against the feed.
It was also recognised by the Blacks players, who voted breakaway Mick Hickling as their best for the day.
“All in all it was a good day at the office and it was good for the confidence,” Scobie said.
“It’s all heading in the right direction.”
