The Maitland Blacks under-18s have kept their unbeaten status alive with a 55-0 win against a valiant but under resourced Southern Lakes team.
The Blacks dominated possession which allowed pressure to be exerted on the Morisset defence, which leaked nine tries.
Andrew Ryan didn’t have a great day as he rolled his ankle during the warm-up and spent the match with it iced sitting beside the coach.
Roscoe Cooley played his usual fully committed style of rugby and was unlucky not to get a try with the referee a bit slow to get around to the opposite side of the ruck to see him on the ball over the line.
Rhys Watson thought the coach said “on the wing” when he told him “prop” and scored two fine tries down the sideline normally occupied by the quick men.
Daniel Stephen got the Hogs Breath award for a non-stop display of support rugby in both attack and defence.
Liam Kearney earned himself a five-minute breather when he decided to use his feet instead of his hands at the back of a ruck.
James Humpheries and Sam Rayment were constructive at
five-eighth to allow the outside backs room to move and score some good tries and James Johnston played about six positions in the backs and forwards.
Dann Lawrence made some of his characteristic runs carrying players with him and caught a lot of kick-offs to allow the team to continually get on the front foot.
Both teams played the game in good spirits and the Southern Lakes boys deserve praise for the way they kept at the task and continued to tackle strongly.
