Redefining progress

22/08/2008 9:45:00 AM
Mr Hilton Grugeon’s ideas of what is progress and what constitutes a progressive council do not come as a surprise as he is a developer.

However, speaking as a member of the “progressive council” one who has counselled caution in the headlong rush to develop before necessary infrastructures such as transport and medical services are in place, or at least a probability, I would like to change the definition somewhat.

I believe a progressive council is one, which consults with its current population about future planning decisions as well as making allowance for sustainable future population growth.

It should also consider the wellbeing of its citizens, access and equity for all residents and environmental factors among others.

Unlike Mr Grugeon, I feel that there are compelling arguments in this city for strengthening heritage protection rather than weakening it due to its importance for both our past history and future tourism opportunities.

The draft Maitland Urban Settlement Strategy is on display until August 29 and comment from the community is invited.

After the local government election there will be opportunities for the public to comment on the draft Ten Year Plan and I would urge everyone to take these opportunities and be part of creating a city and lifestyle that can be a shared and democratic reality.
